Virtually every work of chamber music features a reprise: the return of familiar material after an absence marked by contrast. Many
of the most memorable moments in music are reprises, which range from gentle to grand and from comfortable to profoundly dis-
turbing. How do composers create these effects, and why? Focusing on the works performed in this summer’s festival, Dr. Berry
will guide a conversation about the mechanics and implications of return in the music of Mozart, Schubert, and others.
