LCCMF Collaborates with the Flynn Center in Their New Series for Families

Family Event in the Flynn Lobby

“Let’s do more programming for children that involves classical music!” This idea has been floating around LCCMF planning discussions for a while. At the 2018 summer festival, we had two events for children: an interactive concert by our young resident ensemble, the Kafka Quartet, and an instrument petting zoo, on loan to us by the Vermont Symphony. Both were wonderfully successful and inspired us to move forward with this idea.

When the Flynn invited us to be part of their new free family-friendly series, we saw another opportunity to be involved in enhancing children’s classical programming in our community.

For the show, A Musical Zoo!, we have invited Elizabeth Hickerson of the Peanut-Butter-and-Jam series in Cincinnati to help us in this new program. PB&J has been presenting classical music for children for 40 years, as part of the Linton Chamber Music Series. Local celebrities Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson are artistic directors of the Linton Series!

A Musical Zoo! will feature Elizabeth and wonderful local musicians Karen Kevra, flute, Emily Taubl, cello, and Mary Jane Austin, piano, in the Flynn Lobby at 10 am on Saturday, March 2. Evoking animals well-known and beloved by children, the musicians will fill the lobby with animal sounds from the classical repertoire, including works by Saint-Saens, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Prokofiev.

The show is free, but families should pre-register online or by phone 802-652-4537.

This event is characterized by a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere with families encouraged to choose their own adventure in terms of how long they engage with any activity, whether they use our always available headphones for persons with sensitivities to sound, whether they dance with their eyes or their whole selves. Every family belongs at the Flynn Free Family Saturdays.

LCCMF is delighted to premiere this intriguing series!

[Future events in the series are May 11, a family rave, and June 1 BIRDCODE, part of the Discover Jazz Festival.]

Look for 4 family events at this summer’s LCCMF in August. Details available o/a April 1.
