Inside Pitch: The Soldier’s Tale, part II, The Master Renegade With David Serkin Ludwig

Loading Events

Just as Stravinsky wrote L’Histoire du soldat in response to the rebuilding world of a shattered Europe, composers through the ages have created music in reaction to challenging times. In this session we will explore music written under the pressures of “force majeure”, from Dufay’s compositions written during the Black Plague, to Messiaen’s composing as a prisoner-of-war, to composers today responding to the difficulties of COVID. In each instance, music has acted to express the spirit of the times, shaped by a concern for the present and profound hope for the future.
