Mainstage Concert 1: Last Songs

Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael’s College 223 Ethan Allen Avenue, Colchester, VT

LAST SONGS opens with a charming Beethoven string trio written during his early years and ends with Richard Strauss' final piece, Four Last Songs. This concert features Soovin Kim, Jessica Bodner, and Marcy Rosen playing the trio, and Arianna Zukerman and Gloria Chien performing the Strauss.

Mainstage Concert 3: A Song by Mahler

Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael’s College 223 Ethan Allen Avenue, Colchester, VT

Marc Neikrug's chamber opera, an LCCMF co-commission, tells the story of a celebrated concert singer who is diagnosed with  Alzheimer’s disease.  She and her pianist husband come to an elevated understanding of their love through their music. Singers Jennifer Johnson Cano and Kelly Markgraf are joined by clarinetist David Shifrin and the FLUX Quartet.

Mainstage Concert 5: Love Songs

Our 2021 festival ends with two Schumann pieces from his "Year of Song." Jennifer Johnson Cano sings Schumann Lieder, accompanied by Gloria Chien. We conclude the week with Schumann's Piano Quartet featuring Artistic Directors Gloria Chien and Soovin Kim, with Misha Amory on viola and Zlatomir Fung, cello.

LAST SONGS – Digital Premiere!

Our series opens with works from contrasting points in the lives of two great masters! We begin with a Beethoven trio written during his early years. Though charming, it hints at the dramatic shifts in mood that will come to characterize his later writing. The evening ends with a contemplative cycle of songs by Strauss, composed in the last year of his life. This concert features Soovin Kim, Jessica Bodner, and Marcy Rosen playing the trio, and Arianna Zukerman and Gloria Chien performing the Strauss.

SWAN SONG – Digital Premiere!

SWAN SONG combines a contemporary string quartet by prolific composer Adolphus Hailstork with the unforgettable Schubert cello quintet. Schubert's final work of chamber music is often regarded as one of the finest compositions of the art form. With the rare instrumentation of a full standard string quartet plus an additional cello, this compelling work is a favorite of many chamber music lovers. Plus, hear living composer Adolphus Hailstork's beautiful Adagio for Strings, a contemporary addition to the wonderful adagio tradition. The Parker Quartet and Marcy Rosen perform.

A Song by Mahler – Digital Premiere!

We are proud to have joined a coalition of outstanding chamber music producers from across the country to commission a brand-new chamber opera entitled A Song by Mahler. This 75-minute piece follows an opera singer who is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Over the course of the work, she and her husband, also a musician, grapple with the increasing severity of her symptoms. With incredibly moving music and words composed by Marc Neikrug, and a unique set by renowned creative Doug Fitch, this is a must-see presentation by LCCMF. Singers Jennifer Johnson Cano and Kelly Markgraf are joined by clarinetist David Shifrin and the FLUX Quartet.

ELEGY – Digital Premiere!

Elegy begins with Anglo-African composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's clarinet quintet. This work, historically under-performed despite praise it has received over decades, draws heavy influence from many romantic composers, especially Antonin Dvořák. The evening finishes with Smetana's famously emotional piano trio, written as an elegy to his eldest daughter, who tragically died at the age of four.

LOVE SONGS – Digital premiere!

Composers Robert and Clara Schumann were married in 1840. During the blissful second year of their marriage, the two collaborated on a set of art songs based on the poetry of Frederick Rückert. Hear these beautiful love songs, as well as Robert's famous piano quartet op. 47, an iconic work that many have lauded as the foundation of piano quartet writing going forward.
