Trailblazing composer and flutist Valerie Coleman has emerged as one of the most important voices in the music world today. Among her numerous recent awards and honors, she became the first living woman African-American composer to be performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. The talented members of our 2022 Young Artists Quartet, in residence for the entire festival, share works that are close to their hearts. Few ensembles in history have had the sustained artistry and success that the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio has had for 45 years. They are particularly beloved in Vermont, in part thanks to Jaime Laredo’s 20 years as music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. The trio is joined on this program by star violist and composer Nokuthula Ngwenyama, and they will give one of the first performances in the world of Elegy, an LCCMF co-commission with several other presenters around the U.S. This concert will honor pianist Joseph Kalichstein who passed away in March of 2022. They have studied at many of the great music schools, including UCLA, USC, Yale, Juilliard, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory. In this masterclass, they begin working on Brahms’ first string quartet with Co-Artistic Director Soovin Kim, former violinist of the Johannes String Quartet.

The Catalyst Quartet has devoted itself to diversity, education, and contemporary works. They recently released the second album of their remarkable Uncovered project that celebrates composers who have been overlooked because of their race or gender. We live in an era of identity, where background and personal experiences shape the work, practice, and professional associations of all, but particularly those in the arts. Though an ubiquitous issue to some observers today, for composers the question of identity has always manifested in their work as an expression of racial ethnicity, geographic or national culture, and other personally defining aspects of their lives. We will explore the works of two such examples in the work of British/Sierra Leonian composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Czech composer Antonín Dvorák. Both composers drew heavily from their own backgrounds and experiences to compose music that was uniquely their own, raising issues of genre and appropriation that are still relevant today.

The time in Europe just following the First World War was a period of great rearrangement of society and a renegotiation of relationship with authority. As composing for orchestras became impractical due to the economic disasters of the war, Stravinsky wrote L’Histoire du soldat, a cross-disciplinary work that used a mixed chamber ensemble and narrator. His plans for a European tour were curtailed by the Spanish Flu of 1918, but the piece remains an ever popular one, and an example of a composer responding to the challenges of his time with a highly flexible and entertaining work. This Inside Pitch will explore the many facets of The Soldier’s Tale, from the history of its composition and first performance, to its folktale text and decidedly international musical forms.

Just as Stravinsky wrote L’Histoire du soldat in response to the rebuilding world of a shattered Europe, composers through the ages have created music in reaction to challenging times. In this session we will explore music written under the pressures of “force majeure“, from Dufay’s compositions written during the Black Plague, to Messiaen’s composing as a prisoner-of-war, to composers today responding to the difficulties COVID. In each instance, music has acted to express the spirit of the times, shaped by a concern for the present and profound hope for the future.

The brilliance of The Soldier’s Tale shows why Stravinsky is such a seminal figure in music composition. A ragtag band of instruments serves as the musical backdrop for the colorful folktale about a soldier, his fiddle, and the devil. The irrepressible artist and director, Doug Fitch, gives a virtuoso performance as the narrator and actor of all of the various characters of this theatrical work. After a week of intensive rehearsals, coachings, and masterclasses, the Young Artists Ensemble gives a complete performance of Brahms’ stormy first string quartet. The performance will be followed by a conversation with all of the members of the ensemble about their LCCMF experience.
While our LCCMF performers are among the greatest chamber musicians in the world, they can also dazzle as soloists with their soulful lyricism and breathtaking virtuosity. Come to this fun hour long performance where adults and children alike can learn about the possibilities of each of these instruments in the hands of these virtuosos.
While small chamber music groups are often the ideal vehicle for composers to express their most intimate musical ideas, sometimes chamber ensembles behave more like a flexible version of a full symphony orchestra.
