2020 Festival: EPIPHANIES
Gloria Chien and Soovin Kim, Artistic Directors
David Serkin Ludwig, Resident Composer
For each of us, a few significant life events can have particularly profound effects. EPIPHANIES is an exploration of how such life-altering experiences affected the works of several composers. Love, illness, and loss were the inspirations for the major compositions of our 2020 festival week. These are pieces that have a special place in these great composers’ creative output.
EPIPHANIES will explore Franz Schubert’s cello quintet completed in his final months; Bedřich Smetana’s elegiac piano trio mourning the loss of his daughter and his autobiographical From My Life string quartet describing the loss of his hearing; and Robert Schumann’s year of song, his chamber music after his marriage to Clara. The centerpiece of the festival will be the premiere of an LCCMF co-commissioned chamber opera by Marc Neikrug, A Song by Mahler, about a soprano and her husband coping with her early onset Alzheimer’s.
Join us for more than 20 events over 9 days featuring some of the world’s finest chamber musicians and guest speakers who will illuminate our theme.
