The Creative Journey
This concert features composers at the height of their maturity utilizing their masterful skill in different ways. The dazzling energy of Petroushkates by 2011 and 2016 LCCMF Guest Composer Joan Tower is countered by Haydn’s graceful F-sharp minor trio. The evening’s most intriguing work is Henry Cowell’s eclectic Set of Five that incorporates gongs, Indian tablas, porcelain bowls, and plucked piano into a tuneful collection of musical styles from around the world.

The first half of the closing concert exemplifies Virtuosity, the theme of the 2013 Festival. The highlight of the Paganini-inspired works is David Ludwig’s brilliant new violin concerto played by Co-Artistic Director Soovin Kim. The Festival ends on a thrilling note: The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, arguably the twentieth-century’s greatest compositional virtuoso. Superstar pianist Marc-André Hamelin teams up with Co-Artistic Director Gloria Chien to bring the primal rhythms to life.
